GULLIBLE’S BABBLES - 106: A Boy and His “Willie”

MY CHILDHOOD SQUIRMLE:

I had a Squirmle when I was a kid. I remember the tv commercial for it, the packaging, buying it at the local five & dime and the feel of the Squirmle’s “fur” running across my fingers as I pretended he was my real live pet racing from hand to hand ... “As seen on TV”.

My childhood Squirmle was orange. The packaging was primarily yellow — tall, slender and flat with a round blister card cup at the bottom that housed and displayed the Squirmle within. He was a coveted toy of mine. Another little item that struck all chords for me — toy, pet and imagination. After carefully playing with him, I always put him back in his container, back in the packaging and up on my closet shelf for safe keeping.

RIP MY LITTLE SQUIRMLE:

Sadly, my original little Squirmle friend went the way of most of my coveted and carefully cared for childhood toys ... destroyed by the next generation of children who thought my bedroom of prized and preserved possessions was their secret treasure chest to raid.

This is “Willie”, my new Squirmle. He just arrived in the mail and I’m quite happy with my purchase. I ran across Willie online and instinctively scooped him up without a second thought. He’s not vintage (which I always prefer), but there is a great retro look to art and design of his packaging. He’s also in great condition and I got him at a great price. A no-brainer.

SQUIRMLE REBOOT:

This Willie is actually a 2013 reissue of Wham-O’s original version of the Squirmle. As I was happily admiring my new purchase, I got a good laugh at the verbiage on the packaging. So much so, I thought it worthy of this post.

I’m sure the intent of the copy was originally innocent. Somehow, today, it seems highly inappropriate. Regardless, it made me laugh out loud.

I must say, at the age of 59, I’m very happy with my Willie — and all of it’s “12 inches of lovable fun”.

Good heavens.

Gullibly yours — “Gullible

IMAGE TO COME: The line between pets, toys and novelties was often blurred when I was growing up in the 1960s and 70s. You could literally order living pets by mail through comic books ads and Johnson
